What is your name, title, and unit?
Noelle Thompson, Assistant Director, CALS Career Services
What’s your job in CALS?
I advise students on career development topics like resumes, cover letters, interviews, and other career topics. I also conduct presentations for classes and student groups. In addition, I meet with employers to create recruitment plans to reach CALS students, and collaborate with other colleges to host events like the Fall and Spring Career and Internship Fairs.
How can students connect with you remotely?
Students can make an appointment with me on Starfish!
What is one career/internship tip you have for students?
Be flexible with your timelines! If you expected to have an internship this summer which has now been cancelled, that’s ok. Employers will be understanding about the situation and how your professional development has been impacted. There are other ways to gain skills aside from internships such as learning about virtual interviewing, finding and attending virtual events, improving your online presence, and networking virtually.
What’s your favorite thing about CALS?
My favorite thing about CALS is the deep connection to the state and how you can see our majors have a direct impact on the community, such as research on crops or dairy, and research that is helping to monitor the effects of COVID-19.
What have become some of your favorite social distancing hobbies?
I recently started watching a show about Greek mythology called Great Greek Myths while I was engaging in some social-distancing baking. I’ve been fascinated by Greek mythology since middle school so I was delighted when I stumbled upon this show! I’ve also developed a baking schedule that helps me look forward to the weekends. So far I have made quiche, chocolate chip pecan cookies, and brownies. Next up: carrot cake!
