It’s important to follow up with employers after you visit with them at the career fair or a networking event. This gives employers another chance to remember you. Following up is a lot more than just sending a simple thank you email. Employers see large numbers of students at various events, so it’s important to stand out.
Email first! The first thing you should do after a networking event or career fair is send a detailed email to the employer or recruiter that you met with, especially if you had a really meaningful conversation and you want them to remember you. This email should be tailored to each employer, not a template. Here are some things you can include in the email:
- Mention anything unique that you discussed so that you are memorable to the employer.
- State your qualifications again and include any information that you forgot to share at the event.
- Attach your resume. Even though you might have given your resume already, this gives the employer another chance to look over your information.
Apply online! Another thing that is very important with following up is applying online. Sometimes applying for a position is just handing your resume to a recruiter but other times you have to fill out an online application. After you apply, stay on the website and research the company. This will come in handy if you get an interview, and it will impress the employer.
Stand out! Following up with an employer can be the difference between getting an interview and getting the job. It’s one of the most important things to do after a networking event or career fair, but also one of the things that gets forgotten the most. Good luck!
